Southern Living has published a list of eleven things to do while in Wetumpka, Alabama. The lifestyle-centered publication highlighted the city’s small-town charm, including its downtown area, wide array of outdoor activities, and beloved local restaurants.

In downtown Wetumpka, visitors can find signs in various locations marking where popular shows and movies have been filmed, like Big Fish, Home Town Takeover, The Rosa Parks Story, The Grass Harp, and others.  For those interested in creativity, Marcia Weber Art Objects features more than 1,000 works of art. The Kelly Fitzpatrick Center for the Arts opened a new location in 2021. Florida artist Don Sawyer also opened a studio downtown, and Big Fish Art Studio is “located adjacent to the iconic house from the movie.” Downtown shopping is available at Company St. Mercantile, which sells home goods, clothing, and other products. Sweet Home Books, Lil’ Farmhouse Market, and The Yellow Daffodil Boutique also offer shoppers a wide variety of goods to choose from.

The “City of Natural Beauty,” as the town is known, also offers premier recreational activities. Those interested in the great outdoors can kayak or canoe down the Coosa River.  The area features a number of trails, including the Wetumpka Riverwalk, Swayback Bridge Trail, and Bartram Trail. Additionally,  visitors can view an impact crater east of downtown, created 85 million years ago when a meteor’s impact left a crater nearly 5 miles wide.

After taking in all that Wetumpka has to offer, those who have worked up an appetite can stop by Our Place Cafe for the establishment’s crab cakes with dill sauce, which is listed as one of Alabama’s 100 Dishes to Eat. For a family-centered atmosphere, the publication recommends Grumpy Dog, a casual dining option. If you are looking for a refreshment, head to The Coosa River Craft House on the banks of the river for a wide selection of craft beers.

Wetumpka is the county seat of Elmore County. It currently has a population of just over 7,200.
