Alabama is home to an incredible range of state parks that have something to offer adventurers year-round. Our Alabama State Parks Passport series highlights all of the stunning outdoor spaces throughout the state that make for the perfect seasonal getaway. The eighth in our series is Wind Creek State Park.

OVERVIEW

According to Alabama State Parks, “South of Alexander City on Alabama Highway 128 you’ll find one of the largest state-owned campgrounds in the United States, Wind Creek State Park. However, that distinction is not the only thing that makes Wind Creek special. Wind Creek State Park is the public’s access to Lake Martin.”

Across more than 1400 acres along Lake Martin, Wind Creek State Park is the ideal day trip for local anglers. Home to a number of seasonal fishing tournaments, the lake is known for its range of fish such as bass and bluegill.

The park challenges visitors to test their “nerves of steel”  at local Chimney Rock, one of Lake Martin locals’ favorite locations. They also suggest enjoying a quick meal at the park’s North Picnic Area followed by an afternoon of swimming and fishing on the lake. They recommend visitors try Creem At The Creek to finish off the day with a delicious dinner and drinks.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Wind Creek offers an impressive 586 campsites for visitors to utilize, “Campsites include 102-30 amp waterfront campsites,18-30 amp sewer waterfront campsites, 211-30 amp sewer campsites, 216-30 amp base campsites.” They also offer handicap-accessible camping cabins. All cabins are air-conditioned and feature both a kitchenette and a bathroom.

Wind Creek’s premium campsite amenities include the following: water, sewer, 50/30/20 amp electrical, waterfront access, and TV service with three handicap-accessible campsites. Guests can find both bathhouses and playgrounds throughout the park’s grounds. They also offer a dedicated area for equestrian camping that consists of 20 first-come first-serve campsites equipped with 30 amp electrical and water service.

NATURE

For birdwatchers, Wind Creek State Park is an ideal destination as the park is a stop on Alabama’s Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail. All park trails are home to various waterfowl as well as songbirds and raptors. Visitors can spot both osprey and bald eagles year-round.

The area surrounding Wind Creek State Park offers a number of attractions such as the following: Lake Martin, Flagg Mountain, Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail, Forever Wild Coos WMA Hiking Trail, Smith Mountain Observation Tower, Coon Creek Forever Wild Tract, and Downtown Alexander City.
