As the hot days of summer begin to draw to a close, visitors and residents of Lake Martin can still cool off dockside, courtesy of Yellow Top Ice Cream. The company, known for its pontoon boat with an appropriate and easy to spot yellow top, specializes in delivering ice cream and other cool treats to docks across the lake for eagerly waiting customers of all ages.

Yellow Top’s owner Richard Owens got the idea for the business from his grandchildren.

“My grandsons Hamilton and Jackson, called me and they said, ‘Grandpa, we got the best job for you on the pontoon boat.’ And I said, ‘What’s that?’ They said, ‘Selling ice cream!” Owens told WBRC 6.

He told his grandsons that if he agreed to the idea, they would have to chip in.

“All right now. I’ll think about it but if I do, y’all are going to have to work the ice cream,” Owens said. “No more swimming in the water and fishing. We’re selling ice cream.”

In 2021, Owens was awarded with the Lake Martin Tourism Superstar Award.
